Diabetes can be exhausting. Management is grueling and you have to do it all day every day. The carb-counting, poking, calculating, and constant monitoring can feel like a relentless balancing-act. What we really want, of course, is a cure. But until then, we want to help ensure our audience is as educated as they can be about their condition. In doing so, we hope we can ease some of the difficulty and fear that comes with it.
Further, we believe that the more you know about diabetes and how to maintain control of it, the less likely you are to develop complications in the future.
The best way you can avoid complications like neuropathy, retinopathy, and nephropathy, is to keep you blood sugar within a healthy range. And while medication can do wonders to help in that department, making healthy lifestyle choices is essential. Making sure you get enough sleep, manage your stress levels, and incorporating exercise into your daily routine are all important. Then there are things that a lot of people wouldn’t necessarily consider, like the affect weather has on your blood sugar levels.
And while you’ve likely heard it a lot, it’s impossible to oversell the importance of maintaining a a healthy diet.
We know that can probably feel incredibly restricting at times, but a diabetic diet doesn’t actually look all that different from the same healthy, well-balanced diet that’s recommended to everyone. You should get plenty of vegetables, fruit, lean protein, whole grains, and healthy fats. As for with people who don’t have diabetes, moderation is key. For the most part, people with diabetes can still enjoy the same foods as everyone else. However, it’s crucial to pay close attention to portion size.
That being said, there are some foods that aren’t all that healthy for anyone, but are particularly hard for a person with diabetes to consume without it showing some pretty negative results in their numbers. So, while we like to focus on the positive– finding healthy substitutions to make your favorite dishes diabetic friendly, it’s also crucial that you know which foods you should eat with an extra degree of caution.
