When To Use The “Diabetes Card”

Type 1 diabetic and YouTube vlogger, Diabetic Danica knows that diabetes isn’t a joke. But she also knows that sometimes, when dealt a tough situation, laughter can really help get you through it. And while she obviously takes her situation seriously, she knows that there are times when you have to remember not to take life too seriously.

Recently, Danica made a joke about playing the so-called “diabetes card,” and some of her followers didn’t see the humor in her statements. Instead, they thought she was being serious, and potentially trying to exploit her condition to gain some form of special treatment.

When Danica plays the “diabetes card” she does it in a way that’s intended to be lighthearted about a situation that she’s dealt with every day for much of her life– a sort of tongue in cheek way of poking fun of the idea that she would somehow deserve special treatment because of it. Or, to an extent, the idea that she needs special treatment.

So to straighten things out, she’s back to discuss this topic and give us the dos and don’ts of playing the “diabetes card.” Because for Danica, the reality of playing the “diabetes card” is something that isn’t acceptable in most situations.

Take a look at Danica’s take on when it’s appropriate, and when it’s actually the source of perpetuating some pretty unfortunate misconceptions about what diabetes is, and how it affects people who suffer from it.

Enjoy, and as always, don’t forget to let us know what you think in the comments below!
