Most of have heard about the growing number of people diagnosed with diabetes each year. You’ve probably even heard that it’s an epidemic. However, what you might not know is that this condition has been around since Ancient Egypt. In fact, the term diabetes was first used in 250 BCE.

However, despite physicians having a basic understanding of the symptoms associated with diabetes, no one really understood what was actually causing it for a long time. A very long time. It wasn’t until about one HUNDRED years ago that we started to make significant strides towards really understanding it.

Moreover, until then, a diabetes diagnosis was essentially synonymous with a death sentence until this progress began.

So, what changed?

Dogs!

Some dogs lost their lives in early insulin experiments, and without them it’s unknown how long it would have taken humankind to develop an effective diabetes management tool. Now that we have insulin, veterinarians can use it to help dogs with type 1 diabetes, and there are more of those than you’d think! Check it out, and as always, let us know what you think in the comments below!
